The Hedge Practitioners: Unsung Masters of the Digital Realm

In every great adventure, the hero never travels alone. From legendary epics to modern fantasy, there’s always a wise mentor, a cunning rogue, or a steadfast companion who fills in the gaps where the hero falters. When I started shaping Lionar and the Network Empire, I knew my protagonist, Lionar, would need a companion like that—someone who possessed a wealth of practical knowledge, the kind that can’t always be found in textbooks.

And that’s when I thought of my spouse.

The True Keeper of Keyboard Sorcery

For all my certifications and technical training, there’s one area where I’ve never quite excelled: keyboard wizardry. My spouse, on the other hand, is a master of it. He seems to have an endless arsenal of shortcuts, tricks, and techniques that make computing faster, smoother, and, frankly, more magical.

Where I might take three steps to perform a task, he does it in one swift keystroke. While I meticulously navigate menus, he conjures up commands like a seasoned technomancer weaving digital ley lines. It’s a skill set that’s hard to teach, because it’s often learned through experience, experimentation, and a deep curiosity about how things work beneath the surface.

And I’ll be honest—I’m a little jealous.

The Birth of Fin and the Hedge Practitioners

That admiration (and, let’s face it, a bit of exasperation) led me to create Fin, one of the first companions Lionar meets on his journey. Fin is a Hedge Practitioner, a self-taught technomancer who lacks formal training but makes up for it with an uncanny knack for knowing the little tricks that make all the difference. While Lionar relies on structured learning, Fin moves through the digital world with instinct and intuition, finding the shortcuts others overlook.

Hedge Practitioners, as a whole, are a vital part of The Network Empire—a guild of resourceful, quick-thinking individuals who pick up knowledge in unconventional ways. They aren’t bound by rigid study or official certifications, but their skills are just as valuable. They remind us that expertise doesn’t always come from a classroom; sometimes, it’s found in the small, clever insights shared between colleagues, in the tiny revelations that make our work easier and more efficient.

Recognizing the Everyday Technomancers

The creation of the Hedge Practitioners was my way of celebrating the people in IT (and beyond) who don’t just know things but figure things out. They’re the ones who have an answer before you even finish asking the question, who save the day with a five-second fix you never would have thought of.

And for every Lionar, deep in study, there’s a Fin at their side—ready to say, “You know there’s an easier way to do that, right?”

So here’s to the Hedge Practitioners in our own lives. The ones who teach us the tricks we never knew we needed. The ones who remind us that knowledge doesn’t just live in books—it lives in the hands of those who use it every day.
